Additive

Xylitol

controversial

Sugar alcohol sweetener (in sugar-free gum, candy, some peanut butters, toothpaste, medications) that is acutely toxic to ferrets.

Why it's debated: Causes rapid-onset hypoglycemia and, at higher doses, hepatic necrosis within 24-72h; especially dangerous in insulinoma-prone ferrets. 'Sugar-free' products containing it are MORE dangerous than sugar. Symptoms within 15-30 min.
